Always Becoming

becomingIn discussing the unique culture of America, Albert Einstein famously commented that “Life for [the American] is always becoming, never being.”  This drive to be better is seemingly hardwired into the fabric of our being.  We are a culture of restless spirits who embrace relentless change.  Our success is fueled by the need to constantly raise the bar with ever loftier goals and a bigger, bolder vision of tomorrow.

The problem is this.  It’s easy to settle.  Some call it getting comfortable, others use the term inertia, and still others fear.   Whatever you call it, realize that today’s skills will probably be insufficient to solve tomorrow’s problems.  Just being what you are is a dangerous approach to the future, because the world around you is busy becoming something else.

If you believe Einstein’s words to be true, than it is extremely important to regularly ask a couple questions about your business.

  • What are we now?
  • What do we hope to become?
  • What are we going to do to make it happen?

Be great today.  Become something even better tomorrow.
