AT WITS END: Arguments against a particular part of the budget

An Executive Summary

Answering critics who offered nitpicking arguments against a particular part of the budget, former President Ronald Reagan led his response with an anecdote. He recalled Jack London’s personal credo:

“I would rather be ashes than dust,

I would rather my spark should burn

    out in a brilliant blaze,

Than it should be stifled in dry rot.

I would rather be a superb meteor

With every atom of me in magnificent glow,

Than a sleepy and permanent planet.”

Then Reagan said that London’s credo was once read to ex-pro quarterback Ken Stabler who was asked what it meant. Stabler replied, “Throw Deep.”
