In 1983, 142.9 billion cents-off coupons were distributed in the U.S., with the largest percentage (36.3 percent) appearing in Sunday newspaper free-standing inserts. A record 5.56 billion coupons were redeemed in 1983 according to a study by the A.C. Nielsen Co. This figure represents a 24 percent increase over 1982 redemptions and a 62 percent increase in the last four years. Consumer savings from the coupons totaled $1.69 billion, with an average savings per coupon of 30.5 cents.
