Do you dare to draw every single day in October? The top-notch designers at the Ohlmann Group did!

Jason Hart, one of our exceedingly talented Senior Art Directors, challenged the design team to participate in Inktober this year. What is Inktober? It’s a simple idea, created by illustrator and cartoonist Jake Parker.

Parker created Inktober in 2009 as a way to challenge his own drawing skills and develop positive habits by drawing in ink for every single day of October. Since then, the challenge has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, with thousands of illustrators, cartoonists, artists, creatives, and people who simply enjoy drawing participating in Inktober.

The point is, anyone can participate in Inktober. There are no prerequisites, special skill sets, or fancy materials needed. Well, you will need two materials, but I’m guessing you already have them: paper and ink. Each day, participating artists are encouraged to post their drawings on social media and tag them with the hashtag #Inktober. You may find that drawing every day is also a great exercise in creative thinking.

All you have to do is pick up a pen and start drawing, every single day throughout October. That’s 31 drawings! Luckily, you don’t need to rack your brain for creative ideas each day. Parker has created a handy list of prompts for each day, with a theme that you can interpret any way you desire.

2017 Inktober Schedule

We simply can’t resist showing you a sneak peek of our talented designers’ work. Check them out below!

Melina:

My Inktober is deconstructing the word of the day to characters from cartoons, anime, and games that I enjoy. I started with just black pens and have changed after the first day to add a color that matches the character to every piece. I’ve been using Stabilo 0.4 colored pens for outlines with the occasional Copic markers.

Meghen:

I follow a ton of amazing lettering artists on Instagram. Their work inspires me to improve my own hand lettering skills, so Inktober is a great resource to utilize their prompt list with a different post every day. Since each prompt is unique, it allows me to practice different styles and techniques.”

Andy:

I have always had an interest in portraiture, mostly working in a combination of watercolor and pastels. This exercise has been great for sharpening my skills with quick pen/ink and charcoal studies drawn from photographic reference.

Jason:

Mine are studies of individual panels from a graphic novel called ‘Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind’ using a set size & tools (Pentel parallel pen + ink washes with traditional brushes, on watercolor paper).
