Dayton is vibrant city composed of many different parts, each working together to support creativity, innovation, and community. In a way, Dayton is quite similar to a mosaic. Each piece is important in its own right, but all of the pieces are even more effective and beautiful when working together in harmony.

This is the idea behind the Dayton chapter of the American Advertising Federation’s (AAF-Dayton) latest creative fundraiser, The Mosaic Project.

Here’s how it works: 49 people signed up to create a tile to add to AAF-Dayton’s digital mosaic. Then, the process begins with a single tile. One slice from each edge of the center tile is then sent to the four artists assigned to the tangent tiles who must use that slice as inspiration for their own work. The cycle continues until all of the tiles are completed and arranged into a creative mosaic. While each individual tile is unique, they all blend seamlessly into the adjacent tile from which they were based.

The proceeds raised by artists contributing to the Mosaic Project will directly benefit Dayton’s K12 Gallery and TEJAS (Teen Educational & Joint Adult Studio), providing opportunities for children, low-income students, youth on probation, adults with disabilities, and survivors of violence to experience the educational and healing quality of the arts.

So, who had the honor of creating the center tile? It was none other than our own Director of Client Engagement, Roxann Patrick!

The inspiration behind Roxann’s tile is the 1995 Dayton Peace Accords, which were negotiated at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and paved the way toward ending years of ethnic warfare in Serbia, Bosnia, and Herzegovina, and Croatia. With the peaceful symbol of a dove, Roxann’s work sets the tone for the rest of the mosaic tiles.

Wonderful work, Roxann! We can’t wait to see the finished project. Stay tuned!

AAF-Dayton is still looking for artists to create tiles for the project! And if you’d like to donate to the Mosaic Project and help a local artist fund his or her tile, click here.
