The OG Weekender – 9.9.2011

Digital Awesomeness Carefully Curated For Your Enjoyment:

With the weekend fast approaching, we at The Ohlmann Group would hate for you to sit around twiddling your thumbs with nothing to do.  Rest assured, we’re here to help.  We’ve spent the past week curating a plethora of digital awesomeness for you to enjoy.  So kick back, click away, read, listen, learn, enjoy, and share.

DID YOU BUY YOUR SUPERBOWL AD YET? – The NFL season kicked off last night with Shelby Quinlivan’s Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers starting this season the way they finished the last one – “Winning!”  Although the season just started last night, this article in USA TODAY reports that ads for the upcoming Superbowl are nearly sold out.  So if you are looking to drop a couple million on a Superbowl ad, you had better get busy.  (Call us if you need some help with that ad buy.)

END MALARIA – What is the value of a book full of great ideas written by some of today’s leading thinkers?  Well, the cost of the book End Malaria is $20.00, so hopefully the ideas it contains are at least worth that.  However, consider that the $20.00 you spend on the book goes toward the purchase of life saving mosquito netting that will likely save people from dying and the value of that book is incalculable.  This is a really cool project that will enrich your life and save someone else’s.

SPEAK UP – Is something about your business bothering you?  Are reluctant to voice your concern about it?  Could it be that you are afraid of the consequences, so you are keeping your mouth shut?  This piece from The Harvard Business Review by Nilofer Merchant entitled Your Silence Is Hurting Your Company explains why it is vital for people to express themselves and offers advice on how to do so in a way that fosters constructive dialogue.

BACK 4 THE FUTURE – Nike and The Michael J. Fox foundation have partnered up to sell 1,500 pairs of NikeMag shoes – as seen in the Back to the Future movie franchise.  The limited-edition, light-up shoes are being auctioned on e-bay, and Nike is donating proceeds from the initiative to fight Parkinson’s Disease.  Nike has a cool website displaying the shoes and a great video promo for the cause.  This is a brilliant combination of creativity and philanthropy and definitely worth a look.

100 MILLION – We love Twitter.  Apparently, so do 99,999,999 other people.  Twitter announced this week that it has eclipsed the 100 Million user mark.  In this post from their blog, yhey offer up some interesting facts about the platform, along with some of the world’s favorite people to follow.  How long do all of those Tweet’s stay relevant?  Check out this article from url shortening service bitly that provides some data on the lifespan of links on various content platforms.

PERSIST – In a creative rut?  Feeling the need for some inspiration and words of motivation?  Check out this amazing hand-written letter from Pixar Animator Austin Madison.

REMEMBERING 9/11/2001 – On a more serious note, most Americans will spend some time this weekend reflecting on the day that was 9/11/2001.  It is hard to believe that 10 years have passed since that tragic day.  NPR and Storycorp have put together a beautiful collection of personal stories from people who lost loved ones on that day.  The piece is filled with amazing stories – some heartbreaking, others heartwarming – all  of which are incredibly moving.  May we never forget.

From all of us here at The Ohlmann Group, we wish you a safe and wonderful weekend.
