Change “best” to “most” and you’ve got an apt description of the job assigned to P/O/N as volunteer agency for the 1987 United Way Champaign. The goal of $18,200,000 was one million more than the amount raised in 1986. Add that raise to the uncertainties of economy and the possibility of an auto strike and our work was cut out for us.
Walter Ohlmann, chairman of the United Way Promotion committee headed an agency team comprised of public relations specialists, artists, copywriters, media experts, broadcast producers, and directors. The result was a complete advertising package consisting of 12 ads, 6 radio commercials and 3 television spots plus billboards. We also redesigned and created numerous collateral pieces and placed countless stories and features in newspapers and on electronic media. Nearly a thousand agency hours were devoted to the campaign, which achieved it goal on the target date; the first time in many years. We were happy to be a part of this all-important community fundraiser.
