Penny/Ohlmann/Neiman is heavily involved in creating a Dayton icon to inspire investment and growth in the region. The proposed Wright Monument at the intersection of I-70 & I-75 will depict the 1905 Writer Brothers’ first manageable airplane, and will soar 220 ft above ground with a 120 ft wingspan (the distance of the first flight) and weigh about 80,000 pounds.
We first became involved in the project about 10 years ago when the originator of the idea, Walter Hoy, contacted me to ask if we could create a marketing plan pro bono for the monument.
We could and we did.
And then we heard nothing more about it for six years!
After six years of silence, Judge Rice and Commissioner Charles Curran called for a meeting. We consider that the actual start of this historic project. The Wright Monument project is expected to bring new jobs and industries to the Miami River Valley, and we are proud to be part of a project with so much potential for the betterment of our region.
Today, over three acres of land has been donated for the monument (from the State, Crossroads Properties, and the Kolodesh family), and have gathered in excess of $100,000 in cash pledges. We have also started an active fund raising campaign to support the project, and as secretary of the organization, I am also chairman of the fund raising committee.
P/O/N has designed a brochure, tri-fold, membership materials, banners, and is supervising production of a DVD, which is being donated to the project by Mainsail Productions.
The estimated cost of the project is $7.5M to $10M, which means we still have a long road ahead. But today, it’s no longer a question of “if.” It’s a question of “when.”
Soon, we hope!
