A few things feel like universal staples of childhood. Rock, paper, scissors. Recess four-square. And a quick rebuttal of “But it’s Opposite Day!” (Little did we know the grownups had hamstrung us by giving it an official, singular date in January. But then again… it’s always not Opposite Day, right?) I love the innocent lawlessness of this bizarro 24 hours. It was like punk rock before we had control of the radio dial—a miniature exercise in healthy rebellion and mental gymnastics.

Sometimes you just feel like a fish out of water…well, fish need love, too, sometimes! Our pets are always there for us, especially when we’re feeling weird, misunderstood, or out of place. That love can feel so huge, even when we’re not able to express it through words. I wanted to illustrate how big and precious, albeit weird, the relationships with our pets can be.

As the cold winter fades and spring starts to chirp, March brings forth a glimmer of hope. The warmth of spring is on the way as the seasons change, bringing a breath of fresh air. That is my overarching theme for National Flower Day.
My deep appreciation for flowers and the powerful symbolism they hold developed while I worked at a local floral shop in college. Their beauty transformed wedding venues as couples said their vows. As they were proudly displayed, the florals served as a reminder to cherish every moment.

My good friend Steve, a world-class professional sax player based in Atlanta, is depicted in this illustration. As a kid, I could hear him playing jazz, blues, and rock tunes on his horn four houses down the street from ours. He inspired me to take up the sax. I still enjoy playing it today.

A long-standing tradition in our family, FCBD is held on the first Saturday in May each year. Publishers print a wide variety of comic books, which are given out for free at most comic shops. Stop in on the 2nd this year! Our local shop allows a whopping 8 comics per guest. As a bonus bit of DIY fun, later we check out a Button Press Maker Kit from our local library, and create buttons from the pages we like best. We’ve also collaged them onto blank postcards to send to friends. Great crafting material since it’s free!

There’s something wonderfully simple and iconic about the shape of a donut. Leaning into a bold, colorful pop-art style, this piece is a celebration of the little joys in life. Plus, who doesn’t love donuts?

I’ve always been a huge fan of the American West as depicted by Hollywood. I still love nothing better than settling into one of my favorite old westerns, from directors such as Howard Hawks, Anthony Mann, and, more recently, the Coen Brothers. But to me, the very best, the only true auteur of the genre, and my all-time favorite director, is John Ford. His use of authentic location shooting and wide shots inspired me to make Monument Valley, which he used frequently, the centerpiece of my illustration. The design’s aesthetic was inspired by another groundbreaking director, Sergio Leone. The patterns and shapes reflect the serape that Clint Eastwood wore in Leone’s famous Spaghetti Westerns.

On a visit to Disney World at 5 years old, I fell in love with the Enchanted Tiki Room attraction. I am a huge fan of mid-century “Tiki Culture” and have become a collector of Tiki mugs and other Polynesian decor.

The moments that culminate in creating our personal ghosts, the ones we end up hunting, are often more important than the ghosts themselves. They’re what started the haunting in the first place. Like a storybook with a winding road, full of odd characters and unforgettable obstacles, our life stories leave us with so much spirit. Sometimes that spirit is welcomed, and sometimes it needs to be tracked down.

Whenever I tell people that snakes are my favorite animal, I’m often met with looks of surprise and mild horror. Illustrating this holiday in a fun and whimsical style felt like the perfect opportunity to show some love to these unique creatures. Bonus points for this holiday falling in my birthday month!

I feel the most alive when I’m out and about in nature. One of the most awe-inspiring experiences was camping in Big Bend National Park. Since it’s an International Dark Sky Reserve, the stars lit up the sky in what I can only describe as otherworldly. It reminds you how small we really are in this galaxy. As a fun easter egg, I included zodiac and other popular constellations. Can you find your sign?

I’m passionate about all things Christmas, the decorations, corny music, even cornier movies, and of course…in the words of the immortal Clark Griswold: “The most enjoyable traditions of the season are best enjoyed in the warm embrace of kith and kin. Thith tree is a thymbol of the thpirit of the Griswold family Chrithmath.” That said, all those things can be enjoyed all at once with a brightly colored, gaudily decorated, itchy, ill-fitted, Ugly Christmas Sweater!!! ‘Tis the season, so let’s make the Griswolds proud by rocking those ugly sweaters this Christmas season and beyond.
