Snowflakes are one of nature’s most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together. – Vesta Kelly
In celebration of the winter holidays, Ohlmann Group designers used various mediums to create their take on unique snowflake creations.
Check out our custom designs and our creative process.
Acrylic on canvas
I started out with an underpainting covering the canvas in orange. I added some acrylic modeling paste to create some texture and then used a hairdryer to dry. I then began layering the brushstrokes of blues, purples, teal, yellow ochre, and white, to build up an even more textural surface.
Paper quilling
I wanted to create something tangible for my snowflake design. Paper quilling is an art form that involves rolling, twisting, and gluing thin paper strips into shapes to create decorative designs. I love how the simple shapes arranged together form an intricate, detailed piece.
Flames and matches captured and edited digitally
I wanted to challenge the soft beauty that’s synonymous with snow but still keep an organic element. What’s more opposite to snow than fire? The smallness of matches keeps the intimacy of this complicated piece of nature. It’s just more aggressive now.
Our team also had fun using the website of the Canadian Museum of Nature to draw and animate snowflakes. Try it out!
Just like snowflakes, no two of us are alike. In the year ahead, let’s all recognize and celebrate those differences that make us special. Warm wishes for the holidays from all of us at Ohlmann Group!
